New York: savory foods

If you've read our round ups of New York pastriesdoughnuts in New YorkNew York cheesecakesNew York ice cream, and other desserts around New York, you'll understand exactly why we needed to eat plenty of savory food, too!

Tings

After thoroughly checking out the food offerings, we decided we had no choice but to ask ourselves WWS&GD/E: what would Shawn and Gus do/eat? The obvious answer was Jamaican jerk chicken, so we bellied up to the bar at Tings in Chelsea Market for goat curry and Jamaican jerk chicken with a side of rice and beans and, oh yes, macaroni and cheese. We were seduced by the side dish as the served scooped out a portion of the gooey, stretchy, cheesy goodness for another customer. The flavor was complex and the texture was spot on. This was one of our favorite savory eats!

Food trucks: shwarma

Shwarma mmmm
We found many food trucks swarming around Midtown in the general area of Central Park. We tracked down one in Lincoln Square and ordered shwarma sandwiches, which were massive and delicious. Perhaps not the best choice on a hot day, and really we could have split just one, but we were happy with our choice.

Pizza Rollio

Tucked in a corner of the shops at the Plaza, Pizza Rollio offers pizza on a super thin, almost crispy crepe-like crust, which they cut in strips and then you roll up when you eat. It appears they're moving to catering and/or CloudKitchen now. We ordered a the Godmother: fig, gorgonzola and mozzarella. It was tasty and we managed to finish our full pizza.

Joe's Pizza

We knew we wanted to eat at Joe's Pizza for an authentic New York slice. With locations throughout the boroughs, we found a location on our way back to Penn Station and finally braved the Metro. At Joe's, I got a regular old cheese pizza and Sarah got a slice of white pizza and margherita. The flavors were excellent, and the crust was the perfect balance between crisp and chewy. Unfortunately, a hot tomato burned Sarah's tongue, so be careful.
